About
the Music:
Harp music from many different traditions - notably Ireland Mexico and
Paraguay - will be the theme for the night. There will also be a special
emphasis on Joropo music from Venezuela and Colombia.
The Joropo is played with the arpa llanera (harp), cuatro, and maracas making use of polyrhythmic patterns, especially of hemiola, and alternation of 3/4 and 6/8 tempos. It was originally played, by the llaneros, the inhabitants of the Venezuelan and Colombian Llanos (plains), and thus also called música llanera. The singer and the harp perform the main melody while a cuatro performs the accompaniment, adding its characteristic rhythmic, sharp percussive effect. The cuatro is a four-stringed instruments which is a descendant of the Spanish guitar.
Joropo llanera has influence from three different cultures: Spanish music Europe, the improvised melodies from the African slaves, and maracas from the indigenous people of Venezuela.
For this Film Australia concert the cuatro will be played by renown Venezuelan cuatro player Ivan Vivas.
